About me
I’m a philosopher, writer, partner of a self-styled "enginerd," and mother of a son and twin daughters. I teach philosophy at the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University in central Minnesota, where I won the 2023 Sister Mary Grell / Robert Spaeth Teacher of Distinction award.
I’ve long believed that philosophy is everywhere, and I point it out to anyone who will listen. (A lesson my kids have thoroughly absorbed: “Mom, don’t get philosophical about this, but I have a question…”) I love the liberal arts and supplemented my philosophy studies with minors in math and music. I hold a relational view of personhood and I believe that love and care are the roots of ethical experience. I’m curious about anything interesting. I believe that education at any level should feed students’ sense of wonder and their ability to find questions in ordinary experience.
I’m a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, where I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest liberal arts honor society. I have an M.S. in Logic and Computation from Carnegie Mellon University as well as a Ph.D. in Philosophy (specializing in ethics) from the University of Michigan.
I love five-petaled flowers, tidy spaces, macaroni & cheese, sunshine, and puns.
